GRO(Government Record Office) Indexes

Births, Deaths and Marriages had to be registered in England & Wales from 1st July 1837, although not all events were recorded in the early years. The indexes are arranged alphabetically by Quarter and the originals may be inspected at the Family Record Centre in London. Copies of these indexes are held on micro film/fiche by various libraries and County Record Offices, but are not always clear especially the earlier years which were hand written. Contributors have listed some Poulton extracts from these indexes and although they are not on this web site, the contributors will provide a look up service if you contact them with as much detail as possible.

The format is EXCEL spreadsheet, and the information will be presented in your browser window. Click below to open up the spreadsheet. If you want to keep the information, just cut and paste the information into a new spreadsheet and save it into your MyDocuments folder. I will update the spreadsheet as more Poultons come along.

1841 CENSUS

The 1841 Census was the first real Census in England & Wales. It included the name, age and profession of an individual, and his relationship to the head of the household. There is also an indication of whether the individual was born in the census county or not, but the place of birth of 'outsiders' is not given. Dates of birth are sometimes confusing in that up to 14 the age was exact but after that "in five year groups indicated by the youngest year of the group" which was a long winded way of saying "rounded down".

1851 CENSUS

The 1851 Census was the first Census in England & Wales that provided details of the person's age, occupation and place of birth. Many local family history societies have indexed this Census by County and the results are usually available in County Record Offices. There are some cases where this research has been done privately and the originator will look up a name for a fee. Contributors have some copies of the 1851 Census for the name Poulton by County and will provide a look up service if you contact them with as much information as possible.

1881 CENSUS

The 1881 Census has been recorded on a number of CD ROMS and is published by the Church of Latter Day Saints and copies may be obtained from the Church. From the CD's it is possible to look up any reference to Poulton's in the 1881 Census, being indexed nationally or you can restrict your search to particular Counties or Years or Place of Birth. The following contributors have copies of these CD's and are willing to do a look up service if you give as much information as possible. Word of warning! There are 2768 entries including a few spelling variations so do not ask for a blanket listing.
The 1881 Census is also now available on-line at the LDS website:- www.familysearch.org This site also contains the American 1880 & the Canadian 1881 Census.

1901 CENSUS

The Census was taken across the whole of the UK on 31st March 1901 and is available to search on the web at www.census.pro.gov.uk. People searches are free; more detailed searches cost from 50 pence - good value in any currency. I have extracted complete lists of all POULTONs, which are available in Excel format below. As the list is sorted by Page numbers, a group of adjacent Person ID numbers indicates the probability of individuals being in the same household. Beware there are almost 3000 names in the POULTON file and the size is 429 Kbytes so will take a few seconds to fully load.
